A biologist by training, Juan Manuel is a science communicator with over 15 years of experience working with scientists, research and academic institutions, and private companies from Europe and America. Juan holds an MSc in Science Communication from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and an MSc in History of Science from the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. As a press officer and project manager for the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), he was in charge of deploying the digital communication strategy of the institution. He coordinated the center's participation in H2020's Communication projects with several top European institutions such as EMBL, Karolinska Institute, INSERM, Charite Berlin, Erasmus Rotterdam, etc. As a consultant, Juan has helped scientists and communications departments to disseminate their research, create communication strategies, deal with the media, etc. He has worked with scientists from University College London, the European Research Council (ERC), the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), and the European Parliamentary Research Service, among others. He also works as a science journalist for outlets in Europe, Colombia, and the USA. His primary focus areas are biology, health, basic research, #OpenScience, science policy, science in Latin America and Europe, and most lately, #COVID-19. Reputation is one of the most valued assets of a scientist (fairness, ethics, and transparency being others very much appreciated). The current excitement for science communication in traditional and new media formats has led to increased scientific content shown to the general public, sometimes uncontrolled and chaotic. Juan Manuel's experience can be helpful for scientists and institutions so they can create excellent communication content responsibly and effectively.
