Neuroscientist with 10+ years of experience in academic, clinical and industry research. In addition to driving innovative research, I am also actively involved in teaching (Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. programs), and a member of professional associations. Passionate about science communication & STEM education, mentoring students, forming multidisciplinary and diverse collaborations. I have been a postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) since January 2019. My research interests focus on the mechanisms that lead to neurodegeneration in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as psychiatric disorders, such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. I did my Ph.D. at the Gladstone Institutes - University of California San Francisco (USA) and Instituto de Medicina Molecular - University of Lisbon (Portugal) from 2010 to 2015. In 2016, I was awarded an IBRO/PERC visiting scholarship to work at Zürich University (Switzerland). In 2017, I have worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the biotechnology company - Stemmatters (Portugal). From 2017 to 2019, I was a postdoctoral researcher and a BioScience Career Ambassador at Stanford University (USA). During this period, I've supported undergraduate & graduate students and postdocs establishing academia-industry collaborations and transitions by organizing on-site visits to biotechnology companies and promoting Industry Science Fairs at Stanford University and Genentech (Roche). Over the past years, I have been involved in manuscript reviewing and editing, grant writing, project management, and writing scientific content for educational platforms (iBiology and Osmosis.org). I have extensive experience with professional associations, as a member of the Outreach & Graduate Student Committee at UCSF, an executive member, vice-president and chapter leader of the Portuguese American Postgraduate Society, Women in Science (2012- Present), Organizer of Taste of Science (USA, 2017 -2019), vice-president of Karolinska Clinicum Connection (2019 - Present), Organizer of Pint of Science (Sweden, 2019 - Present). To expand my expertise, I got selected for a Google Developer Challenge Scholarship to learn the basics of programming (USA), and have attended two schools of Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Sweden).
